Issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS).
- Be at least 18 (intrastate) or 21 (interstate / hazmat)
- Hold a valid Texas driver's license
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
- Pass DOT medical exam (DL-51 form)
- Pass vision and knowledge tests at TX DPS
- Hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for new Class A/B applicants
- Pass the Texas CDL skills test (pre-trip, basic controls, road test)
CDL Classes in Texas
Class A
Combination vehicles 26,001+ lbs, with a towed unit over 10,000 lbs (e.g., tractor-trailer).
Class B
Single vehicles 26,001+ lbs, or towing under 10,000 lbs (e.g., dump truck, large bus).
