Texas CDL Requirements

Issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS).

  • Be at least 18 (intrastate) or 21 (interstate / hazmat)
  • Hold a valid Texas driver's license
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
  • Pass DOT medical exam (DL-51 form)
  • Pass vision and knowledge tests at TX DPS
  • Hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days
  • Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for new Class A/B applicants
  • Pass the Texas CDL skills test (pre-trip, basic controls, road test)

CDL Classes in Texas

Class A

Combination vehicles 26,001+ lbs, with a towed unit over 10,000 lbs (e.g., tractor-trailer).

Class B

Single vehicles 26,001+ lbs, or towing under 10,000 lbs (e.g., dump truck, large bus).

Class C

Vehicles designed for 16+ passengers or carrying hazmat (smaller vehicles with endorsements).
